DIY Spa : Relaxing Day At The Spa

Who doesn’t like a relaxing day at the spa? No one we know is safe! A visit to the spa may seem like a dream far from being achieved, but be patient. The spas will be back, and you will be back at the spa! In the meantime, who can say that you can not recreate the experience for yourself at home?

As the seasons change and the colder and drier weather sets in, it’s important to exfoliate your skin regularly. A DIY scrub at home will not only soften the skin, it will be good to practice a little self-care!

We spoke with Kate Broadhurst, Spa supervisor at ESPACIO Spa Waikiki, who created and shared a simple DIY spa treatment with us. If you want even more time for yourself, light a scented soy or beeswax candle with essential oils and keep a pair of extra fluffy pajamas to keep you warm after your DIY spa experience. Dry brushing is an ancient technique that improves blood circulation and detoxifies the body through lymphatic drainage. It leaves you and your skin a feeling of freshness and vitality. The first step in the dry sleeve is to choose the right tool. In Hawaii, Broadhurst is able to breed his own loofah! However, if you are not yet in the tropical paradise, any dry brush with natural fibers will give you a good result.

Before turning on the water in your shower or bathtub, get on a mat or in the dry shower and start brushing upwards, towards your heart, starting with the soles of your feet. Continue the movement, towards your heart, until you reach your neck. Brush from the neck and shoulders down.

Kate recommends dry brushing every other day or twice a week to promote a healthy and happy lymphatic system!


To continue relaxation, a body scrub is the perfect next step. The best part? Most of the needed ingredients can already be found in your kitchen or pantry!

Here are some great essential oils to consider for each recipe below:

  • To relax: patchouli or lavender
  • To balance: sweet orange or ylang-ylang
  • For breeding: pink geranium and rosewood

However, the most important note when creating your perfect spa experience is to surround yourself with things you love: a plant or flowers, a candle, a cup of herbal tea waiting. From scents to room atmosphere, they should reflect your perfect environment, so opt for what makes you feel comfortable!


DIY fruity peeling

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sea salt
  • Carrier oil for mixing in dough
  • Lemon Zest / Lime
  • A few drops of your favorite essential oil

Looking for a fun and fruity touch? Take a papaya, guava, mango, etc.and crush the fruit in a food processor. Then just add it to the mixture!

DIY Invigorating Body Scrub

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup Coffee Grinds
  • Carrier oil for mixing in dough

Brown sugar is a natural and gentle scrub, while coffee adds caffeine to the skin to improve blood circulation and invigorate the skin. Together, it creates a stimulating and calming experience.

To complete your spa, follow these steps with a relaxing shower or warm bath and a quality moisturizer. Remember to take time for yourself and enjoy the moment. You deserve it!
